"Tamrielic history is positively bursting with unexplained oddities!"
—Amalien[1]

Amalien was a prominent Altmer scholar and antiquarian active during the Interregnum of the Second Era. She was a member of the Antiquarian Circle of the University of Gwylim, and an expert in subjects related to historical enigmas and arcane phenomena.[1]

History[edit]

Amalien hailed form the Summerset Isle.[1][2] She was born with a twisted spine, a condition that made walking impossible.[1] However, she was never branded a hulkynd, as her parents rejected the cultural obsession with perfection and instead raised her with love and support, despite the social challenges they faced.[UOL 1] Eventually, she left Summerset, feeling that there was little left for her to learn there. She found the Sapiarchs, the Thalmor, and the Dominion stifling—too many rigid rules and narrow minds, with no room for risk or innovation. Seeking adventure, she joined the Antiquarian Circle at the University of Gwylim to explore the world. She was also a skilled engineer and designer, responsible for creating the plans for her wheelchair, which greatly improved her mobility. By 2E 582, she was residing at the University's Solitude branch in Western Skyrim, where she jestingly referred to herself as the "resident eccentric." Ugron gro-Thumog, a colleague from the Circle, contributed to her move to Solitude's Gwylim Annex. She primarily focused on history related to unconfirmed historical mysteries and bizarre, arcane phenomena. Her favored topics included the disappearance of the Dwemer, the secrets of the Hist, the mysteries of the Zero Stone, and other similar enigmatic subjects.[1] As of then, she also discovered parts of a vamidium, a mechanical mount.[3] While in Skyrim, she worked on a theory regarding the Snow Elves, Dragons, Dwemer, Magnus the Divine, a group of Atmoran skalds and six-legged mammoth.[1]

At some point in 2E 582, she conducted the interview with the Impresario for the University of Gwylim, as Gabrielle Benele, the usual host, was called away on important business and entrusted the series to her. The interview focused on Tamrielic holidays and the traditions associated with them.[4] The host continued the series by speaking with Sister Chana Nirine of the Cult of the Ancestor Moth, discussing the role of the Order and the Elder Scrolls entrusted to them. Sister Chana caught Amalien's attention following a recent incident off the southern coast of Hammerfell, involving Orpheon the Tactician's schemes,[5] although she emerged unharmed thanks to the intervention of the Undaunted. During the conversation, Sister Chana shared an excerpt from The Pilot's Purchase, which Amalien speculated could be an unknown fragment of Udhendra Nibenu. She had sent several letters to Sister Chana and her Order seeking clarification on this matter but had not received a response at the time. Additionally, Amalien inquired about the nature of the ancestor moths. She was also responsible for editing the interview text and expressed her belief that by the time the next installment of the series was published, Gabrielle Benele would have returned from her urgent matters.[6]

Research[edit]

As a member of the Antiquarian Circle at the University of Gwylim, Amalien worked with a wide variety of relics and historically significant items, contributing her expertise to the study of numerous artifacts from across Tamriel and beyond.

Summerset Isles[edit]

Echoes of Aldmeris

Among the items Amalien researched in her home province of the Summerset Isles were armor designs of the ancestral Altmer, maps of Auridon dating back to the formation of the Mages Guild, and tokens commemorating the Skywatch celebrations of freedom from the Sload. She also studied embellishments from the era of the Aldmer, including prayer beads made of aetherquartz that may predate the Altmer, an artistic rendition of Aldmeris, the ancient homeland of the Aldmeri, inert anemone inlays linked to the Sload, a particularly ornate Calian aetherquartz sphere, which she theorized once belonged to a Grand Athelan or another important religious figure, and a set of Nilumin River Pearls, highly prized by the Ancient Aldmer for use in alchemy and magic.[19]

On the main island of the archipelago, among the items discovered were an apraxic decanter made from shattered aetherquartz calian, a map of the region, a badge she speculated was linked to the Jurisreeves, an altar, a music box, an ancient family tree document related to an Altmeri family dating back to the first landing, a Prismatic Sunbird Feather used by the Sun Birds of Alinor, and even researched the Alinor Allemande dance.[2]

Pyandonea[edit]

Among the findings she studied related to Pyandonea was a statue of a sea serpent, which Amalien theorized might represent Orgnum himself, along with a pipe she believed to be of Maormeri origin—both of which were discovered in Auridon.[19]
