Caterpillars are minuscule, many-legged[12] larval insects found throughout Tamriel which eat leaves.[13] They can sport a variety of colors and patterns, including green,[13] orange and purple stripes,[14] yellow, and red.[15] Types of caterpillar are often incredibly diverse from one another, with some possessing furry backs[15] and others having up to sixteen eyes.[16] In nature, they are preyed upon by robins,[13] while Argonians are known to prepare them in their cuisine[12] and beverages.[15] Bosmer smoke caterpillars through bone pipes.[17] Inferniums closely resemble large caterpillars.[18]
At some point in a caterpillar's life, they develop a cocoon,[19] from which a butterfly or moth may emerge.[14] Caterpillar farms can be found in Black Marsh, where they are raised until they become moths and butterflies, at which point they are eaten.[14] Silks may also be harvested from caterpillar farms, which are spun into rough linens.[20]
