Maniel Sylbenitte is a slightly incautious Breton enchanter of Conjurer rank in the Mages Guild. He can be found in his basement room in the Old Ebonheart guild hall, engaging in his current project - the study of cursed gems found at Daedric shrines.
Maniel sells a variety of spells, including a couple of MWSE spells, along with enchanted items, and also offers training in Conjuration, Enchant and Mysticism.
He wears an expensive robe with matching pants and shoes. He wields a Devil Spear and carries all of the wares he restocks.
Aside from his natural bonus and resistance to magicka, and his ability to shield himself for short periods, he knows a variety of spells, which you can buy from him.

Dialogue[edit]
Don't Touch My Gems![edit]
- Greetings:
- (After giving him the gems, waiting a week, and surviving the Dremora Lord attack):
- "Oh my... That wasn't supposed to happen. Are you all right? Here, take this potion, it should help. I didn't anticipate the summoned Dremora would be that hostile. But well, accidents like this happen, and we have to continue with the research. This encounter, although unfortunate, has given me an idea. I think I'm really onto something big. I'll surely have more interesting finds in about... A week? Come and see me then." (You receive a Quality Restore Health potion)
- Stop. This is getting too dangerous. You're risking everyone's lives! / [Conjuration ≥ 70] Don't you know the first thing about summoning safeguards? This is getting too dangerous. You're risking everyone's lives!:
- "Oh... I see. I am really sorry, I guess I've been too reckless. I got carried away by my enthusiasm and put both of us at risk. What a fool I've been... Now, I won't stop with my research -- I simply can't, but I promise you I'll be more careful. Much more careful. And thank you for your concern. I'll make sure accidents like this don't happen again. Come back in a week or so, and I'll be happy to share my findings." (Disposition +20)
-
- Continue with the research.:
- "Splendid! I'll get to it immediately. See me in about a week, I think I'll have more for you then. And you're going to love it, I'm sure!"
- (After waiting another week, and if he is still alive):
- "Ah, you're back, %PCName! I've been experimenting with these gems further. You were right to warn me of the dangers involved. There were some minor accidents, but I took all the necessary precautions and nothing bad happened. While I couldn't really reproduce the persistent summoning stimulus I had in mind, I did reach an interesting reversal with this gem, and I want you to have it.
- [Maniel extends a wrap of clothing towards you, his fingers carefully avoiding the red-incrusted gem within.]"
- Continue:
- "This beautiful enchanted gem attunes itself to potential Mundus-bound daedron fluxes typical of Morrowind shrines. Exciting, isn't it? They're anticipated thanks to a chance sibyllic inversion of the quaternary charm layer. Of course that also means that the gem can't beckon them, and instead would summon itself -- and you -- to their possible destination. I won't touch it myself, but I know you'll show good care in its use. Thank you for all your help with this and for not letting me risk my own life." (Disposition +10, and you receive the Bloodstone of Daedric Inference)
- cursed gems:
- "What? Cursed... Ah yes! Oh my... You didn't touch it, did you? Damn, I knew someone would run into it eventually. Well, what happened?"
- A scrib appeared behind me.:
- "A scrib? Are you sure it wasn't anything deadlier and more... Daedric? Phew, I guess it could've ended much worse. As you've probably read in that note I left there, I was working on that diamond when I accidentally dropped it right as the enchantment was setting. Ever heard of gems that, once touched, summon a Dremora? They've been noted among the offerings in Daedric ruins. Well, that's the kind of thing I've been trying to achieve. I just need to get different gems to study. Say, would you help me?"
- Sure, I'll help you.:
- "Wonderful! I need some five new cursed gems to proceed with my research. I've already studied small pearls, spinels and tektites, though I don't think you'll find cursed stones of so little value. I had the good luck to access a casket of rubies and emeralds back when the Guild was contracted to dispel the King's inventory, and inert diamonds weren't impossible to come by on the black market. Now I need to look at gems of another type if I'm to compare how the enchantments play over material structures." (Disposition +4)
- Continue:
- "I've searched Hadrumnibibi to no avail, but such offerings are reported to be found again in the majority of Daedric ruins. Look for the main shrine, where there should be some altar with various objects. You'll know you've found the right gem if a Dremora appears as you touch it. When you get the gems, simply bring them to me. Good luck!"
-
-
- What's in it for me?:
- "Gold. And more. I'll pay you 500 drakes when you've collected at least five cursed gems. That is roughly what you'd get from selling them to unsuspecting merchants. And that's just the beginning -- after I've studied them thoroughly, I'll share my findings with you. I believe I'll be able to make a nice enchantment from what I'll learn. What say you?" (See other choices)
-
-
-
- I don't have time for this.:
- "That's a pity. Think of all the discoveries we could've made. Ah well, I'll have to find someone else to bring me the gems." (Disposition -4)
-
-
-
- (If you refuse again):
- "Fine, fine, I get it, you won't help me. I'll find someone else who will." (Disposition -6)
-
-
-
- (If your Level > 30):
- I'm familiar with those. What if there are no gems left to be found?:
- "You can't be serious. This land is peppered with Daedric ruins! And the Dark Elves warn off anybody trying to approach them. There has to be plenty of treasure, and gems, left untouched... At least for one resourceful enough to deal with whatever guards them." (See also other choices above)
- I'm serious. I have traveled long and rid this land of Daedra worshippers.:
- "... May I first point out that I'm not myself a Daedra worshipper and that my interest in this is purely, ah, academic? Still, I know it's impossible to keep these altars deserted forever. Like the Guild keeps reminding us, Morrowind's religious authorities tried -- except they're always busy elsewhere now and cultists are gathering to these ruins again. Even if you don't see anyone there... Well, who can blame them for hiding from you? I'm sure there'll be new offerings left in some places eventually." (See other choices above)
-
- "Have you changed your mind? I still need to obtain more cursed gems." (See identical choices above)
- "Do you have any gems?" (If you have a cursed gem in your inventory, see choices below):
- Give him a cursed (gem):
-
- (If you gave an Amethyst, Aquamarine, Garnet, Khajiit-Eye, Opal, Peridot, Sapphire, Topaz, or Turquoise):
- "Yes, this gem was cursed. Do you have any more?" (See other choices)
-
- (If you gave a Bloodstone, Moonstone, or Rock Crystal):
- "Yes, this gemstone was cursed. Do you have any more?" (See other choices)
-
- (If you gave a Black Pearl):
- "Yes, this pearl was cursed. Do you have any more?" (See other choices)
-
- Give your other gem of the same kind / Give remaining gems of the same kind:
- "Excellent! Thank you, %PCName." (See 'You have all the gems...' and 'That was all' choices)
-
- Give a different gem:
- "Anything else?" (See other choices)
-
- (If you have any cursed pearls, spinels, or tektites):
- Ask if he can use more pearls, spinels or tektites:
- "I can, but they'll be less useful to me and I'll need more of them." (See other choices)
-
- (If you have any cursed diamonds, rubies, or emeralds):
- Ask if he can't still study more diamonds, rubies or emeralds:
- "Diamonds, rubies, emeralds -- like I said, I've already studied them. I'd need perhaps three times as many to find any new details and I don't have the budget to pay you more than I already offered... But if you can look past the profit, yes, I could probably get something out of different samples of those same gems." (See other choices)
-
- Give him a less useful cursed pearl / spinel / tektite / emerald / diamond / ruby:
- "Yes, I suppose I can examine more of these. Do you have any others?" (See other choices)
-
- Not yet / Do not give any gems / That was all.:
- "I understand. I'll be waiting."
-
- (show next...): (Shows more choices)
-
- (show previous...):
- "[Maniel fidgets impatiently.]" (Shows previous choices)
-
- (If he has ≥ 5 cursed gems, you will need more if you give a less useful gem):
- You have all the gems you needed now?:
- "You're right, those are all the gems I need. Thank you, %PCName, I can now proceed with my research. Here are the promised drakes. Come back in a week or so, I might have more for you then." (Disposition +10, and you receive 500 gold)
- "It is still too early to draw any conclusions, %PCName. You need to give me more time."
- "Ah, yes! You're just in time too. I was just about to try something out. I've examined the gems you brought me, and I think I'm onto something. I studied the traces of magic left in them and I believe I've found a way to trick the Daedra into believing it's their treasure that's being robbed, and I think it would be useful for... Gah, no more talk, let's try this out!" Goodbye (He casts a spell that summons a hostile Dremora Lord)
- "They're truly fascinating, don't you think?"
A Stunning Proposition[edit]
- Greetings:
- "A vampire, here of all places? I assumed that your kind was reduced to hiding in dilapidated, dusty old tombs and ruins in this province. However, I must say that I'm actually quite happy to learn that's not the case. Indeed, I believe that we might be able to help each other out. I'm looking for the Scrolls of Paralyzing Domination."
- "Did you manage to retrieve one of the Scrolls of Paralyzing Domination for me, partner?"
- "If it isn't my former partner in crime! You look well... uh, I mean, for an undead. I'll be sure to hit you up once I'm in further need of your unique skillset, night walker."
- Scrolls of Paralyzing Domination:
- "It has come to my attention that the mages of House Indoril have created quite potent scrolls. Although the spell is so powerful that it renders most people who use it immobile, it gives you the ability to dominate the minds of your adversaries all around you. But you, my friend, are not like "most people", aren't you? I know that your sort can endure the shock quite easily. But before I divulge any more details, I need your word that I can count on your help."
- I don't wish to be involved.:
- "How shortsighted. You'll never push the boundaries of science with such a cowardly attitude!" (Disposition -10)
-
- I'm interested. Speak.:
- (If your Mysticism < 90):
- "Ooh, I've got a partner in crime now! How thrilling. Now listen up, partner. These Scrolls of Paralyzing Domination, or so I've been told, are locked behind a magical barrier on the upper level of the Crossing of Lamps in Roa Dyr. The barrier spell is supposedly exceedingly sturdy, and it's being upheld by an Indoril sorceress named Diranya. There is a way to get through it, though. During her ritual, she burns an incense made of an herb called Marsh Root."
- Continue:
- "I believe that if you rub this incense over your body, its power combined with your natural talents should be enough for you to be able to cross the barrier without burning to a crisp. Well, we can't ever know for sure, right? The incense is quite scarce, but the Indoril have got to have some lying around. And if you won't have any luck finding it, then I suppose you'll somehow have to force Diranya to shut down the barrier. If you know what I mean. Bring me one of the scrolls, and you'll have your reward."
-
- (If your Mysticism ≥ 90):
- "Ooh, I've got a partner in crime now! How thrilling. Now listen up, partner. These Scrolls of Paralyzing Domination, or so I've been told, are locked behind a magical barrier on the upper level of the Crossing of Lamps in Roa Dyr. The barrier spell is supposedly exceedingly sturdy, and it's being upheld by an Indoril sorceress named Diranya. It shouldn't pose a problem to a mage of your abilities, though -- just make sure to avoid the guards. Bring me one of the scrolls and you'll have your reward."
- "Do you have the scroll, partner?"
- Not yet.:
- "Then make haste. As proper men of crime, we should be careful and shouldn't be seen together more often than necessary. Don't want the guards to get suspicious, you know. Maybe we should be meeting somewhere more discreet? A graveyard under the veil of midnight, perhaps? I shall think it through."
-
- I have it. Here you go.:
- "Excellent! I knew you'd be the suitable candidate for the job. Perhaps if every vampire was as helpful as you, your sort wouldn't have such an awful reputation. I'm sure that you've helped yourself to the other Indoril artifacts that were stored in the vault. That seems like a sufficient reward for such a simple task. In fact, you've probably benefited from our deal much more than I did. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some experiments to do, partner." (Disposition +10, and removed 1 Scroll of Paralyzing Domination from your inventory)
- "Yes, it was quite fascinating. Have you used the other scrolls? I need to know all the details."
- (If you have been cured of vampirism):
- "You're saying you're cured? What's that supposed to mean? Such a useful gift, and you've gone ahead and squandered it! I've got no need for such foolish partners. Our deal is over." (Disposition -20)
When Interiors Don't Match Their Exteriors[edit]
- previous attempt:
- "Oh it was quite an interesting experiment really. Instead of expanding space, a pocket realm was anchored to one of the doors here. Unfortunately the same lack of Aedric forces that allowed for the swift creation of rooms also caused no end of trouble when paired with careless use of magic. After a few apprentices got lost in looping hallways only to be found days later, Arquebald decided to lock it all safely away."
- "I hope you were careful not to disturb the magic in there further, %PCName."
