You will join the race at Thane Mera's behest to replace her champion.
- "If you're not participating in the Race of the Nine Holds, please stand back."
- I'm the new Champion of Windhelm.
He will explain the rules of the race:
- "I see. Thane Mera is playing her political games again?
No matter. As the last racer to arrive, you get to light the starting flare. Get ready. The race begins as soon as you ignite the flare." - What are the rules of the race?
- "Rules? Haven't you ever ran a race before?
You have to run along the outer walls of the city and must pass through each of the nine towers along the walls. One for each hold in Skyrim. The first racer to pass through the ninth tower wins the event."
Speaking to him again before lighting the signal flare:
- "The other racers are waiting. Light the signal flare and start the race!"
Speaking to him while the race is happening:
- "What are you doing? Don't stop to talk to me. Run!"
If you didn't stop for Hadring the Swift and won:
- "Congratulations! For someone who smells of southern decadence, you're fast and strong.
The race is yours, Champion of Windhelm!" - I won the race! What's next?
- "Well done, Champion! You ran like a Khajiit that was being chased by a banekin! Thane Mera just left. She wants to speak to you as soon as possible. Meet her in her usual place, out in front of the palace."
If you didn't stop for Hadring the Swift and lost:
- "A good race, but you were outclassed. Still, I'm always happy to see someone new perform so admirably."
- I gave it my best shot. What's next?
- "Thane Mera just left. She wants to speak with you as soon as possible. You can find her in her usual place, standing in front of the palace."
If you stopped for Hadring the Swift:
- "What happened to you? You were doing so well. Why'd you stop running?"
- One of the racers was murdered.
- "Another murder? In broad daylight? Thane Mera just left and she wants to speak to you. And she needs to hear about this, anyway. Hurry and meet her in front of the palace!"
Speaking with him again:
- "Thane Mera needs to speak with you. You can find her in front of the palace."
