Charcoal Cave

Charcoal Cave is a medium-sized cave between the Imperial City and Bravil containing monsters and bandits. It contains three zones: Charcoal Cave, Charcoal Cave - Abandoned Tunnels, and Charcoal Cave - Bandit Lair.

Notes[edit]

  • This cave contains 24 Cairn Bolete plants and 39 Wisp Stalk plants.
  • In the second room, near the campfire, you can find the Charcoal Cave key in a chest. This key does not open any doors or chests so it is pretty useless. Presumably it was created to open the door to the Bandit Ringleader in The Bandit's Lair, which is locked.

Exterior[edit]

Key to Maps
Charcoal Cave, Exterior
  • The exterior is located at coordinates: Tamriel 8, 3
  • This location's map marker (M on map) is named Charcoal Cave (editor name CharcoalCaveMapMarker). The entrance door is E of the marker, 40 feet away.
  • 0-2 Monsters are near the entrance
  • 1 Wilderness Creature (Forest variety) is near the entrance
  • 2 Nirnroots are at locations N on map
  • The following plants can be found near the entrance: 6 Fly Amanita plants, 15 Monkshood plants, 2 Primrose plants, and 4 Summer Bolete plants

Zone 1: Charcoal Cave[edit]

Charcoal Cave

At the first intersection you can choose to go straight ahead to the east or into the hallway to the north. When you continue east, you will arrive at a large room where two Bandits guard two minor loot chests. One of these holds the rather useless Charcoal Cave key (see Notes). Immediately to the south is the lower entrance to Charcoal Cave - Bandit Lair (D) while continuing to the southwest leads you to two rooms: in the first two enemies guard two minor loot chests (one locked), while in the second a single enemy guards another chest.

Heading north immediately after entering will instead lead you to a vantage point in the Bandit Lair and is thus the preferred route to take. The first room you enter hosts an enemy guarding a minor loot chest. In the next corridor, you may want to sneak to the tunnel to the north: if you continue west you will trigger a Falling Log trap at T and alert the enemy behind it.

The next room is very large and hosts three enemies and a locked minor loot chest. To the north is another room with an enemy and a minor loot chest. From the lower central area of the penultimate room you can access door C to Charcoal Cave - Abandoned Tunnels.

Zone 2: Charcoal Cave - Abandoned Tunnels[edit]

Charcoal Cave - Abandoned Tunnels

This zone is occupied by Monsters and Animals. The first room of this zone has no enemies but does contain a locked minor loot chest. Three tunnels depart from it:

  • The southeastern one leads to three rooms with a total of three minor loot chests (one locked) and up to three enemies guarding them.
  • The western one takes you to a small room with a locked minor loot chest and up to two enemies.
  • The northern tunnel leads you first to a room with three enemies and a minor loot chest, before continuing to two more rooms where you find another minor loot chest and up to three enemies. The door to Charcoal Cave - Bandit Lair (E) is found in the final room.

Zone 3: Charcoal Cave - Bandit Lair[edit]

Charcoal Cave - Bandit Lair

There are two ways to reach this zone: from Charcoal Cave via door D or from Charcoal Cave - Abandoned Tunnels via door E.

If entering from the latter, you will enter into a small room with a minor loot chest. Head southeast and you will arrive in a larger room with a canyon in the middle. There is a Falling Log trap at H which, if you time it right, you can use it to kill one of the bandits who patrols below you. Another bandit can be found across the canyon from you but be careful when crossing the stone bridge, as there is a Swinging Log trap (G) activated by the tripwire at F. After looting the two chests here, either return to the first zone or jump down into the canyon.

Head south and avoid another tripwire (F), which springs the Falling Log trap at H. Behind the trap is a tunnel with another bandit which leads to a room with a locked minor loot chest. The southeastern tunnels from here leads to two small rooms with two bandits and two minor loot chests. Meanwhile the western one will lead to another intersection. To the north are two more rooms with up to two enemies guarding two minor loot chests while pressing on to the west leads you to the locked wooden door at K. Behind it you will find a small room with the boss-level Bandit Ringleader, the locked boss chest (B) and a minor loot chest. Be careful when entering as there is a Swinging Mace trap at J just behind the door which is activated by the pressure plate at I.

Occupants:

  • 1 boss-level Bandit at location A on map
  • 2-4 Bandit Enemies (each 50% probability melee , 25% archer Bandit, 12% Dog, 12% Nuisance Animal)
