Niryastare (/n.riˈɒ.st.ə.r/ (About this soundlisten)) is an Ayleid ruin located on the northern edge of the Gold Coast at the banks of the Brena River, northeast of Sutch and south of the Hammerfell border. Parts of the ruin extend into the Colovian Highlands, towards Fort Hastrel.[1] They have long been known to be haunted by all manner of undead.[2][3]

History[edit]

In the Merethic Era, the Daedric Prince Ithelia was confronted at Niryastare by Hermaeus Mora, who threatened to align the other Princes against her if she did not restrain her power. Ithelia did not heed this warning, and she was subsequently imprisoned by Mora with the aid of Azura, Boethiah, and Mephala. Mephala's contribution to this was the creation of the Skein of Secrets, a Daedric artifact that can be used to track Ithelia. Following Ithelia's imprisonment, Mora wiped all memory of her, and the Ayleids of Niryastare built a vault to house the Skein of Secrets. Using Aetherial light, they created an impenetrable magical seal which could only be unlocked by harnessing the power of a Great Welkynd Stone. This, in turn, was powered by four Lesser Welkynd Stones, which were then scattered throughout the ruin and magically hidden.[4]

Niryastare is presumed to have been abandoned following the fall of the White-Gold Tower in 1E 243 at the end of the Alessian Slave Rebellion, as the Empire toppled the city-states one by one and the clans inhabiting them fled.[5]

At some point between 2E 538 and 2E 544, Beragon and his adventuring company explored Ayleid ruins across the West Weald, attempting to penetrate the depths of Niryastare without success. The group could not enter the vault, and disbanded following their failure.[6][3]

Circa 2E 582, Ithelia was freed from her prison in Apocrypha. In order to defend her against her rival Princes, a cult known as the Recollection set up wooden fortifications around Niryastare and began occupying the ruins. They entered the underground ruins and attempted to recover the Skein of Secrets, but between the ruin's traps, undead guardians, and magical defences, the cultists could not get any deeper into the ruins than the Welkynd Chamber. The Skein was instead recovered by the Vestige and Beragon Sharp-Dagger, who used Abolisher and the Lamp of Clarity to recover the hidden Welkynd Stones and enter the vault.[4]

By 3E 433, the ancient derelict ruins were still accessible, but its subterranean halls were crawling with undead such as skeletons, zombies, ghosts, wraiths, and liches.[7] It was among the ruins explored by Orc adventurers that were sent out by Gortwog to seek treasure for the glory of Orsinium.[8]

Due to its haunted nature and shared Ayleid origins, inhabitants of Rivercrest sent out the Warrior to investigate the ruins in 4E 180 in search of the lich Celemaril the Sorcerer-King, viewing it as a possible lair for his operations.[9][2] The crumbling ruins were filled with overgrown plantlife and sarcophagi, and while the Warrior cleared out the many wights, skeletons, and skeevers within, Celemaril was nowhere to be found, having made his lair at Drachurst Keep instead.[9][10]
