Fort Hastrel is a ruined Imperial watchtower in the Colovian Highlands, in the province of Cyrodiil. It is a picturesque relic of the First Empire, located near the ancient Highlands Road.[1] Hastrel Hollow is a nearby Ayleid ruin to the southeast of the tower.[2]

History[edit]

In the early First Era, the Hastrel Cohort was led by the famous General Thibaut of Kvatch. During one of the Colovian West's incursions of Reaper's March, General Thibaut led the Hastrel Cohort, along with their comrades from Forts Linchal and Ontus, though their original purpose is lost to time. Thibaut had a unique relationship with his soldiers. His second-in-command was his wife, Tertcia, and his children were below him in the cohort's command structure. It is said that even the nightsoil men of his hometown rode with him.[3]

How he died is unknown, but while the Linchal and Ontus cohorts returned home, the Hastrel cohorts stayed to build a traditional Colovian crypt and township both called Thibaut's Rest. In time, the village became known as Greenhill, and the crypt became Thibaut's Cairn, where it housed Reaper's March's rich, respected, and powerful deceased.[3] Well after the fall of the First Empire, Fort Hastrel went into ruin and untouched for centuries.[4]

In 2E 582, a West Weald Legion cohort led by Captain Dartorius patrolled near Fort Hastrel and was ambushed by a superior force of daedra. When the Captain could not take command, Legionary Ulrath ordered the squadron to take shelter in the fort, but Dartorius countermanded the order and forced them to charge head-on to their attackers. Dartorius tried to escape and leave her squad to die, but Ulrath knocked her out and left her on the Highlands Road. The rest of the squad retreated to Fort Hastrel but in the end, Ulrath was the only one to survive. An adventurer found Dartorius, and she asked them to find out what happened to her squad. They eventually found Ulrath in Fort Hastrel and they told them everything that happened and that he was leaving the Legion. In the end, Dartorius received his report, but it is unknown if she went after him for deserting or not.[5]

In that same year, King Nantharion Rayn, revealed to be the leader of the Recollection cult, attempted to plant his wildburn seeds across the West Weald to expand the Dawnwood, restore both an Ayleid kingdom and their patron, Ithelia to full power. Hastrel Hollow was one of these locations. A Bosmer camp in the hollow was destroyed by the Recollection as they tried to plant it. An adventurer came and destroyed the wildburn seed before it could activate.[6] In the late Third Era, Fort Hastrel was still abandoned and occupied by a coven of vampires.[7]
