Sorry but I've never seen that happen. Sounds like you're screwed, but maybe asking on the article's talk page might get some help. If you're on the PC, try using some of the Console codes the article contains. rpeh •TCE 07:11, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

Red Links[edit]

Mind helping me with something? As you'll notice on a lot of the books series that appear again in Skyrim, the footer is filled with broken links (for example, see Skyrim:A Dance in Fire, v1 and Skyrim:Biography of Barenziah, v1). From my understanding, the problem is with the transclusion, they haven't been updated for Skyrim. These books had their names changed throughout the series. To keep the links working, the footer links seem to be set up to make an exception for books with a name different from the rest. Is there a way to add Skyrim as an exception, so we can fix the red links? I can't find an example where two exceptions need to be made for any transclusion on the wiki. Maybe I'm not looking hard enough, but if I had an example of how to do this, I should be able to fix the footers. --AKB Talk Cont Mail 00:12, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

The way in which books have been renamed with no good reason is one of the many reasons I think certain people at Bethesda are choosing to have a little fun with UESP. If you look back through various edit histories, you'll find several well-chosen words from Nephele about the pointless renaming of books from MW to OB, and the fact it's happened now with SR just serves to reinforce the point.
It made sense to treat differences as exceptions, but now it's the Wrong Way To Do It: exceptions have become the rule Instead of transcluding the footers I think it makes more sense to use separate Lore, MW, OB and SR footers. It's more work but means less crap at the bottom of every affected book.
I'm wary of making this kind of decision on my own, though. Nephele did a lot of work getting things working up to TESIV and may have spent some time thinking about TESV. rpeh •TCE 02:09, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I've also wondered about whether to simply stick to the Lore names for the books in all namespaces instead of jumping through ridiculous hoops for the sake of name details that nobody else even notices. If necessary, place redirects at the "correct" in-game names. Or alternatively put redirects at the Lore names.
But in the end, right now my entire operating principle is "just do the first thing that works." I'm doing whatever's necessary to simply move forward with adding information/content, even if half of it is going to need to be redone later (and I'm paying the price right now with creatures -- Dragon Priests, Falmer, etc. -- that I incorrectly labeled as NPCs). So as far as I'm concerned, do whatever works for you. --NepheleTalk 17:01, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Dungeon[edit]

Hey there I read your post about home a Skyrim dungeons page could be a force 5 shit storm ,and I completely agree ,so I started working a little on a sandbox version ,even though you said there will no point until the CS/CK is complete [it took me a second to figure out the abbreviation haha]. But this is what I have down as a basic idea ,I was wondering what you think ,maybe get some pointers ,I'm pretty much brand spanking new and shiny to editing.

User:Flood15/Sandbox

Thanks for your time , Chimo. 04:33, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

That's a good start. The goal is to get a page like Oblivion:Dungeons or Shivering:Dungeons. Don't worry too much about the statistics - they'll get filled in once the CK comes out. rpeh •TCE 10:49, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Interior map[edit]

I made a map for the temple Bleak Falls Barrow... But it seems overdone. Now spend a little more time and did some test versions, without correction and with correction. Which version is better? 1 - Stage 1 - Without correction, 2 - Stage 2 - autocorrection, 3 - Stage 2 - correction: levels, contrast, sharp and 4 - Stage 3 - additional correction: light. ZKoshak as Ruesp 06:46, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

None of those links work for me - they all go to 404 File Not Found pages. rpeh •TCE 10:49, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Hm. Strange... Then, there: 1, 2, 3, 4. ZKoshak(Ruesp) 11:15, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Ah, those work. Personally I'd go for #4 - the brightest one. Doing the maps is going to be a real problem this time. How did you do it so the map background isn't transparent? The only map I tried to do (this one) was so poor I stopped trying. rpeh •TCE 11:47, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I use Gimp. Selected in the screenshot using the lasso tool, copy and paste into another file over a black background. Around the edges is a bit of the original background. ZKoshak(Ruesp) 13:21, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Now. Part two ... The Sanctuary. Made 2 versions: [1] and [2]. ZKoshak(Ruesp) 17:54, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Reachwater Rock image[edit]

Hiya, could you check the Reachwater Rock image for me? It seems our versions differ. Didn't Reachwater Rock have a distinct waterfall conceiling the entrance? It might be you had two images mixed up there, or there really are multiple entrances. --Timenn-<talk> 13:39, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Nope, it's the same entrance - you can see the trees at the top match. Mine was taken from further around to the left so you can see the entrance. You can't really see the entrance on yours - it's hidden behind the lower tree, but the image is better anyway. rpeh •TCE 15:11, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
Mighty weird. It definitely seems the same place, only your image has no waterfall. I revisited the location, and I can see the waterfall from your angle as well. --Timenn-<talk> 15:58, 3 December 2011 (UTC)
I've had several bugs like this. It looks like my version was just glitchy - and yours is better in any case. Definitely the same place though. rpeh •TCE 21:01, 3 December 2011 (UTC)

Two Quick Style Questions[edit]

When I'm filling out a page I have a few questions about preferred style:

  • Capitalization of in game references (non-proper): The filthiest things are Mudcrabs|mudcrabs.
  • Wiki-linked text inclusion: I took the Bandit's or Bandit's sweetroll.

If you see me doing anything else wrong let me know so I stop doing it in further articles.--Bwross 04:11, 4 December 2011 (UTC)

The first one is the right way to do it, although you'll find hundreds of examples where we leave the capital in place because it's a fairly recent change. Bandit's is the way to go too, although again you'll probably find lots of counterexamples. rpeh •TCE 10:38, 4 December 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, also should journals be classified as books or notes with Book Summary? — Unsigned comment by Bwross (talkcontribs) at 20:21 on 4 December 2011
Notes have usually meant sheets of paper like recipes and so on. Journals are bound in leather (or what looks like leather) so I'd call them books. rpeh •TCE 06:08, 5 December 2011 (UTC)

Plant Images[edit]

Hey Rob. I noticed you uploaded an image of a Crimson Nirnroot at File:SR-ingredient-Crimson Nirnroot.jpg. I had already uploaded one at File:SR-flora-Crimson Nirnroot.jpg. Yours is obviously at a higher resolution, but I was wondering which image naming convention is preferred: "ingredient" or "flora". --Legoless 23:27, 6 December 2011 (UTC)

Hmm, yes I got that one wrong. In general, it's -ingredient- for the harvested item and -flora- for the plant as it's seen in the wild. I didn't check the quest page and just assumed we needed one when I saw the ingredient page wasn't using an image yet. rpeh •TCE 06:12, 7 December 2011 (UTC)

Forums[edit]

Is it just me or did something happen to the forums? When I go on it says 'this board has no forums.' Is it just my internet or did something crash or go wrong? — Unsigned comment by Imperialkhajiit (talkcontribs) at 20:58 on 10 December 2011

I don't use the forums much, but when I just tried to access them everything seemed fine. If you're still having problems, let me know - or let Daveh know for more prompt action. rpeh •TCE 21:06, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

Dragon Alphabet[edit]

I was considering redoing the Dragon Alphabet to look more like the font that was created, but I wasn't sure where either of them originated. I know you uploaded them, but I didn't know if you got them from game files or what. My end result would be something like File:Lore-dragon-Poem.png, only the individual letters. Same size and everything, but just a little clearer. This might also help with a possible font template that uses the images. elliot (talk) 21:11, 10 December 2011 (UTC)

I honestly can't remember how I did those images. There's no doubt that they're all a little dated now. If you're going to re-do the images though, I hope you'll be doing it from in-game images. There's a font that's available if you're a PC user, and everything should come from that now. At some point we need to switch our old font for the Bethesda one, too. rpeh •TCE 21:53, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I downloaded the one we have on site; as it's the only one I could find. Is the font file an exe file or is it just an in-game file? elliot (talk) 21:58, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
Which version of the font did you download? This one is generated from the game resource files, whereas this was the pre-release version. If you want the font in other formats, see the urls at the bottom of MediaWiki:Common.css. You may also want to talk to Vaag256 about starting to use webfonts. There's a bit of info on my talk page, but that was followup to a fair bit of discussion on IRC that's probably necessary to understand the background. --NepheleTalk 22:12, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
I am not too sure the in-game font is any different than the one we have on the wiki now. I think the only way to take advantage of the font would be to upload it as a bigger size and then go from there. I think everything else has been figured out. elliot (talk) 23:18, 10 December 2011 (UTC)
There are actually some quite big differences between the two fonts. The pre-release version was a good attempt but there were always going to be problems in tracing letters from the tiny bitmaps that were available. We definitely want to use the one that comes from the game files. rpeh •TCE 07:59, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
I guess I should have been a little clearer. The official font is similar to the images of the letters we have now. They didn't change anything really in the last year, which is odd. elliot (talk) 07:34, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Smithing-related question[edit]

Hi,

excuse me if this may sound a little unimportant. I'd like to know more about how the various % increases affect specific items. Example: Volendrung compared to Ebony Warhammer. Both are made of Ebony and both have 25 base damage. Volendrung needs Ebony Ingot to improve just as the Ebony Warhammer. If one unlocks the Two-Handed skill tree (5 perk on Barbarian and 100 point in the skill itself), he/she will end up with 75 damage using any of these two weapons. 100%+100%+100% that's logical so far. However, if someone boosts Smithing with magical items and potions as it is possible, there are going to be significant differences. I would like to know why or how these things work. So I did a little testing. Used Dragonplate Gauntlets - , Necklace - and Ring of Peerless Smithing resulting in a +75% Smithing bonus. I also used a Blacksmith's Elixir (+50%). Naturally, with a fully unlocked Smithing tree. After all these but nothing else, I improved both weapons at the blacksmith's table. Ebony Warhammer: 154 damage. Volendrung: 116 damage. Why??? It seems like one of the Smithing increases (probably the Elixir) had no effect at all. Any thoughts on this? Am I doing something wrong? I checked several times and naturally the boost was still active. I checked it with other items such as the Helm of Yngol and so on and the conclusion is that the unique items are always poorer after upgrading no matter how many different boost you try. So if one would have an Ebony Helmet and a unique helmet with the very same base armor rating, after the (potion - and item - boosted) improvement the unique ones are always a lot weaker. Thank you, sir. — Unsigned comment by 88.132.45.92 (talk) on 11 December 2011

Sorry, I honestly have no idea how this all works. rpeh •TCE 08:03, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
All right, thanks. Should I add this question to some topic discussion? If yes, which one? Smithing? — Unsigned comment by 88.132.45.92 (talk) on 11 December 2011
That would be a better place, but I don't know if anyone will be able to help you at this stage. rpeh •TCE 11:47, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

Quest Link Template[edit]

Would you be able to tell me how Template:Quest Link pulls the quest's description from its article? It's a concept I'd like to try on another wiki, and I can't quite work out which bits of the code control it. Thanks, Enodoc 22:04, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

It's done with the #save line in {{Quest Header}} together with the #load line in {{Quest Link}}. That is part of the site-specific extension MetaTemplate. --Alfwyn 23:14, 11 December 2011 (UTC)
Site-specific extension. That's a shame. Is there any way the same or similar functionality can be achieved without the extension? --Enodoc 00:20, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
We used to use /Description sub-pages for quest descriptions and the Quest Link and Quest Header template loaded those instead. Much less flexible and a real PITA, but it worked. You can see the old version here. rpeh •TCE 06:13, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
OK, thanks for your help! --Enodoc 09:25, 12 December 2011 (UTC)

Dragon letter images[edit]

It seems that image links are case sensitive. Is there a lore-related reason why the "single letter letters" like R and N are capitalized, while "two-letter letters" like aa and ei are lowercase? Also, is OO supposed to be capitalized? Chris3145 22:42, 11 December 2011 (UTC)

No idea. I can't remember. rpeh •TCE 07:23, 12 December 2011 (UTC)
As far as I remember, it's gone from the image and the second comment in the January post of Gameinformer about translating the cover. 95.55.33.226 05:21, 17 December 2011 (UTC)

Small image request[edit]

Hey rpeh! You seem to have sudden outbursts of image-adding, so I figured I’d make yet another request. It’s for my revamp of The Taste of Death (a rather disgusting quest, actually), and my progress can be found here. I simply need a quest image (maybe the guests seated at the table?) and a shot of the sleeping priest on the altar, ready for carving – preferably with either Eola of Namira in the background, maybe both if possible. Hope you can find the time, and thanks in advance. ☺--Krusty 07:54, 13 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm not ignoring this. I had already thrown away several images of those exact scenes before you posted this message, and I've done the same to several since. I can't get the right shot. rpeh •TCE 00:13, 18 December 2011 (UTC)
No worries; looking at the scenery, I realize the dinner guests are not exactly grouped together, making it hard to get a good shot of the macabre feast. You probably noticed I launched the page, so we have all the time in the world. In the meantime, thank you for this - it turned out to be quite a walkthrough considering it is "only" an objective! :D --Krusty 23:39, 18 December 2011 (UTC)

Registration[edit]

Hi, I tried to register to the forums and it has been about 2 days with no activation e-mail. I would really need it to be registerd before Christmas for private reasons. Help please. Oh! My email is evbe1@comcast.net if that helps.

Sorry but I don't use the forums. Check your spam folder, and if the email isn't there.... I dunno. Try again. rpeh •TCE 21:55, 22 December 2011 (UTC)
Alright, sorry. I tried contacting Daveh, but he hasn't gotten back to me. Can you suggest someone else that could help before Christmas Day? Dragonsoul17 11:35, 23 December 2011 (UTC)
To be honest, there's probably nothing anyone on UESP can do since it seems your ISP is blocking the email. It might be worth posting on Daveh's talk page, but your best bet will be to ask your ISP about their spam filter. Emails are definitely being sent so it's not a problem with the site. rpeh •TCE 00:06, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

Catching diseases while immune[edit]

I'll avoid the editwar, but there's a report on the Talk page; it's happened to me as well; and neither case was with the ?1.2? patch. "Something that might never happen anyway" NOT happening to ONE person is exactly the same as "Something that should NEVER happen" happening to multiple people. You must not have had your coffee yet. :P Maybe it's actually fixed in 1.3 and maybe it isn't, but until we have something resembling confirmation/consensus on that, the bug note stands. Aliana 11:30, 24 December 2011 (UTC)

One or two isolated reports doesn't change the fact that it's working fine for most people. rpeh •TCE 11:59, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
I don't expect you to read every post on the wiki; or check other wikis; or use google to verify every edit, but your opinion doesn't actually count for more than multiple other editors', and especially not when you're trying to prove a negative. The consensus is against you: not just here, which alone is enough for your actions to be wrong, but globally. I'm reinstating the note, and I expect it to stay there until that consensus changes. Please don't remove it again until you have a better justification than "because I say so". Aliana 15:18, 24 December 2011 (UTC)
I honestly don't give a fraction of a damn what you expect. Stop being an asshole or, quite simply, I'll block you. If you don't like that, edit somewhere else. rpeh •TCE 09:16, 25 December 2011 (UTC)
I left this for a few days to cool down, but now it's time to address it. I realise that the wiki's rules on actually adhering to things like the block policy don't apply to you, and I can accept that, but the fact that you feel entitled to make personal attacks on other editors at will, calling them assholes and suggesting they "GTFO off my wiki" if they don't like it is disgraceful behavior for any editor, let alone one whose conduct is supposed to set an example for others to follow. Aliana 18:25, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
I had the exact same problem too but after installing the latest patch it is, at least in my case is fixed, so it seems that the 1.3 patch fixed the problem. Three of my friends who also noticed that they caught diseases said that it is no longer the case. Also, for the vast majority of people it worked fine before the patch as well. That should be enough to "change the consensus" and justification to change it.RIM 18:46, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Same for me - I have the 1.3 Patch and the Disease Immunity granted by Beast Blood works perfectly. Also, rpeh never told you to "GTFO my wiki" - he told you to edit somewhere else if you don't like the way we do things here. --Kitkat TalkContribE-mail 18:54, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
Well, the consensus has now changed so we can now remove the note. I'm sorry that rpeh got annoyed at you but he did have a point, although I can understand your position. in any case the note can now be removed or changed.RIM 19:00, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
The issue here isn't the edit, it's rpeh's behavior. Him "being annoyed" is not justification for the attitude or language he used to express that annoyance. Aliana 21:53, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Aliana, I've spent quite a lot of time over the last week playing with my nieces (6, 3, 1) and nephew (4) and got far more sense out of them than I ever get out of you. Certainly more enjoyment. For one thing, when given a set of basic rules they're capable of adhering to them, while you treat them as suggestions that you only follow when you feel like it. In this, your most recent set of inappropriate behaviour, you first accuse an editor who disagreed with you of vandalism, then started insulting me on my talk page - when you know damn well you should be discussing it on the article's talk page. When called out and reminded again how you should be behaving, you start leveling other accusations and generally upping the ante on your behaviour.
The reason I'm so fed up with you is that this isn't the first time you've done this, or even the third. Your history on this site is a history of picking arguments and attacking others when they disagree with you. I'd be acting totally inside the blocking policy by blocking you, because it's a measure designed to reduce disruption - something you supply in spades. Just look at your latest contribution here: taking up the same argument again, in the same style, while providing no new evidence. What on earth do you hope to achieve?
Time to drop the stick and back away from the dead horse. rpeh •TCE 19:13, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
So your response to someone having the nerve to point out your insulting behavior is to continue to insult them? Lovely.
Let's get the facts straight here: the revert was (1) an unregistered user, (2) from an IP that had never made a single edit to the wiki before, and (3) had no edit summary. "Removing content from pages without explanation" frequently is vandalism - apparently enough so that it's the first example listed on the Vandalism page - and given the other factors I felt it was dubious enough to undo. It may have been an incorrect call, but it's a long way from warring. If by "latest contribution here" you mean the 24 Dec post, how does providing multiple links count as "no new evidence"? (Incidentally (at this point, since consensus is that 1.3 has fixed it, as RIM says), the bug appears to have been caused by traps, which explains its rarity and was even mentioned in the first comment on the Talk page: we just didn't put 2 and 2 together while it was still relevant).
All that aside, this isn't about the bug, and it hasn't been since before Christmas. It's about your behavior. Regardless of how much you dislike me, calling me an asshole and comparing me to a 6 year old is a clear personal attack, and something you would jump on anyone else for doing. That's what I have a problem with, not a minor piece of technical content on a minor page. Aliana 21:53, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
No, it's about you trying to change the argument again because you keep losing. And I'd never compare you to Ellie - she's charming, polite and intelligent. Now kindly stop wasting my time. rpeh •TCE 22:57, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Changing the map API?[edit]

Hello rpeh, for our German Skyrim map we are currently think about switching to the OpenLayers API to be on the safe site because of the traffic limits introduced for the Google Maps API. I'm curios if you're planning something similar. Also I've found a way to get at least an early version of the map at start. In the Skyrim - Textures.bsa you can find the folder textures/landscape/tamriel which contains LOD maps for all game cells. They come in different solutions (from 4 cells per tile to 32 cells per tile). So this would make a really basic map for experimentation. --Killfetzer 08:36, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Hiya. I asked Daveh about the new map limits and he thinks we're likely to be okay for the moment. Even with a Skyrim map we should just about stay within the usage limits. I know he was looking at alternatives, though, so thanks for pointing us at OpenLayers.
I spotted the tamriel tiles shortly after release and thought about using them for a basic map, but I decided the resolution was too low. Almost half the tiles are for areas outside the game boundaries (doubtless so we can see White Gold Tower and Red Mountain in the distance), which means the area of the game tiles is really small. I'd be interested in seeing anything you manage to get going, though, and will probably take a stab at it myself before too long.
Here's to another year of cooperation! rpeh •TCE 11:08, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

Faction error?[edit]

I noticed that in some factions listed for NPCs, RoBoT listed something like which mission is the player's active mission. It shows the faction rank, but there is no faction listed for the rank. However, after investigating, it is the actual faction name (CWFieldCOActiveMissionFaction). So it looks like the = need to be replaced with {{=}}. Though I should mention it. elliot (talk) 19:49, 30 December 2011 (UTC)

There are a few factions that I swear they put in just to screw me up. It's on my list to fix - thanks for adding that one to the list. rpeh •TCE 19:55, 30 December 2011 (UTC)
