Quest-Related Events[edit]
When you enter Vashabar, you will witness the end of an argument between Laeni, Clendagal, Minth and Greenspeaker Nedolir. Speaking with Laeni, she explains that she and Clendagal have been wanting to marry for years, but their fathers hate each other and refuse to give their blessings. The recent argument was the last straw, and the pair feel forced to leave the village if they wish to marry. Laeni will ask you to speak with Agawen Ciiril, and ask for her help to gather supplies for the journey.
Agawen Ciiril will be cleaning a mug as you approach:
- "Welcome, traveler! This is the Vashabar Garden of Ale. I'm the owner and host, Ciiril.
Did I hear raised voices just now? Was that Laeni and her father?" - You heard right. Laeni and Clendagal are fed up. They want to leave, start a new life.
- "Green preserve me! My brother Nedolir and old Minth are the problem here, sure enough. They've never seen eye to eye.
But since Vashabar grew, their views have petrified like ancient bark. Neither will bend, but it's the lovelies who suffer." - The couple wants you to gather supplies for their travel. Will you help them?
- "Easy enough … aye, I'll do it. But look, Laeni and Clendagal deserve love and their village both.
Can you go talk to those old goats? Tell them their children plan to leave? Maybe that will make them finally see reason." - Laeni seemed sure they wouldn't change their minds.
- "Hmm. How can you …? Ah! I have just the thing. Take these. I brewed up a few casks of jagga earlier this week.
Offer them a drink and maybe they'll be more inclined to listen. I'll be over by the stables when you're done." - I'll give them the jagga and see what they have to say. See you at the stables.
You will be given Ciiril's Jagga and you will need to find Minth and Nedolir around the village. You have the option of asking Ciiril more questions before leaving:
- "Those old mammoths should be in pod houses around the village. And don't worry if they get cranky. They're more bark than branch, if you take my meaning.
Was there something else you wanted to talk about?" - Yes, can I ask you a few questions?
- "Of course. You're kind to involve yourself in affairs of the heart like this.
Family, tradition, belief. And my brother. What a mess." - Do you want Laeni and Clendagal to marry?
- "I want them to be happy, sap sweet as that is. They've put off their own plans for years now, first supporting their fathers and then the village.
If they want to stand and be married, Y'ffre himself couldn't dissuade me."
- "I want them to be happy, sap sweet as that is. They've put off their own plans for years now, first supporting their fathers and then the village.
- Why were you so quick to help the couple?
- "In Valenwood, the oldest trees are revered. But the long shadows they cast can strangle saplings before they take root.
Minth and Nedolir are much the same. They're giants. But we need new growth to secure the future."
- "In Valenwood, the oldest trees are revered. But the long shadows they cast can strangle saplings before they take root.
- What's in this jagga you gave me?
- "Pig's milk! Primarily. It's my own recipe, so there's a bit of this and a bit of that in there for flavor and body.
If you like that, you should taste my rotmeth! I've been brewing a batch for Laeni's wedding ceremony since she was a baby."
- "Pig's milk! Primarily. It's my own recipe, so there's a bit of this and a bit of that in there for flavor and body.
- Why does Laeni call you Agawen Ciiril? (Appears when you ask one of the above questions)
- "Since we were kids I've been trying to get Nedolir to listen to reason. He may be a pillar of the community now, but to me he'll always be my little brother.
He thinks he's teasing me by calling me a wise woman. But I secretly love it."
- "Since we were kids I've been trying to get Nedolir to listen to reason. He may be a pillar of the community now, but to me he'll always be my little brother.
Speaking with both fathers, they refuse to budge from their stance and will not allow any marriage to take place. Afterwards, you can find Ciiril at the stables with some loaded backpacks, talk to her to inform her of the bad news:
- "There you are. I've got a good start on gathering supplies for Laeni and Clendagal. How was your chat with the old goats?"
- I gave the fathers the jagga and told them about the marriage. They didn't change their minds.
- "Those two could give lessons in cussedness to a timber mammoth. And now they'll be looking for the loving couple. Damn.
My niece can't leave! If only … hmm. If their fathers won't budge, can we convince Laeni and Clendagal to stay?" - Why would they stay if they can't get married?
- "I know those two. They'd never be happy as outcasts. If they stay, there's always a chance we can sort this out.
I still need to work on these supplies. Would you be willing to talk to some friends of the families? Get them to encourage patience?" - I can do that. Who should I speak to?
- "Hmm. Gundelion. He's Laeni's grove-father. Helped her walk for the first time. Ah, and Malaniel. Clendagal's tutor with a blade.
Both of them should be nearby. Thank you, traveler. There's a stiff brew with your name on it once we get this sorted." - All right, I'll see if Gundelion and Malaniel would be willing to help.
Speaking to her again:
- "Gundelion and Malaniel should both be near the center of the village.
Don't be surprised if they find the news about as welcome as a timber pig in the roots cellar."
When you speak with Gundelion and Malaniel, they will refuse to convince the couple to stay if they don't want to. But they will suggest you speak with Spinner Belwelas for help. The spinner suggests finding a copy of the Rite of Propagation, an old ritual which puts the decision for an issue in the hands of the community as a whole, and the decision made must be abided by. Once you find a copy in the Wilderhall, you can return to Ciiril at the stables and hand over the scroll:
- "Singer be praised, you're back. What did they say?"
- Laeni and Clendagal may not have to leave after all. Take a look at this.
- "A look at … a rite? I don't. Oh! Yffre's arse, this is amazing! Where did you dig up this relic?
It was Spinner Belwelas wasn't it? Canny old goat. Hah, what a find! Nice work, traveler!" - One of the villagers mentioned I should speak to him, and Spinner Belwelas came through.
- "I never even thought to ask him. Brilliant. Go tell the loving couple.
In the meantime I'll gather Minth and Nedolir, as many others as I can. If Laeni and Clendagal are going to ask the village to decide, we need the whole village to be present." - Where are Laeni and Clendagal?
- "With their fathers hunting for them, I told Laeni and Clen to hide out. They have a little love nest in an overgrown ruin on the southern edge of town. I bet they're there.
Tell them what you found. Vashabar will be waiting when you return." - I will. See you soon.
You can speak with Laeni and Clendagal and then help them find items that represent them for the rite. Once received, you can return to Ciiril's beer garden where several villagers are gathered. As you approach you will see the couple stand together beneath the stone arch and Agawen Ciiril will notice them:
- Agawen Ciiril: "Vashabar! Laeni and Clendagal have returned. Let them be heard."
- Greenspeaker Nedolir: "Ciiril! What's the meaning of this? Someone explain to me what's going on!"
Speaking with Ciiril before Nedolir:
- "My brother looks furious. Good! I can't wait to see what happens."
Once you have spoken with Greenspeaker Nedolir and told him what is happening, the Rite of Propagation will begin:
- <The pair kneel before the crowd.>
- Clendagal: "Vashabar, we need your help. Laeni and I want to marry."
- Laeni: "As you all know, our fathers refuse to support us. And so we invoke the Rite of Propagation, an ancient Bosmer custom."
- Clendagal: "We gathered these symbols, representations of our roles in the village. An Ayleid mosaic for me."
- Laeni: "And a greenspring seed for me. Friend, you helped us find them. Please bring them forth."
- <The pair stand up.>
You can then place the Ayleid Mosaic and Dormant Greenspring Seed either side of them:
- Clendagal: "These symbols represent our commitment to the village and to each other."
- Laeni: "Our future lies in whatever you decide. Do we have your support?"
- Agawen Ciiril: "Well, what do you say Vashabar? Do you support this union?"
- Gundelion: "Aye!"
- Malaniel: "Aye!"
- Spinner Belwelas: "Aye!"
- Melbora: "Aye!"
- Agawen Ciiril: "Hah, there it is! Congratulations you two. Let's give the couple a moment. Drinks for everyone!"
- <Clendagal and Laeni embrace as the onlookers walk away.>
- Greenspeaker Nedolir: "All right, you old arse. The village has spoken so let's make the best of this."
- Minth: "I suppose you're right, you bastard. If we're going to be kin, let's get to drinking like it."
Speaking with Agawen Ciiril before Laeni:
- "You talk to the happy couple. I'm going to try to get the village pleasantly tipsy."
If you spoke to Laeni but haven't turned in the quest:
- "I'm so proud of those two. Thank you, traveler."
Talking to Agawen Ciiril after completing the quest:
- "To think this all started with shouting and a traveler walking in from the wilds. Hah! Just look at what you've done for this village."
- You did a great deal for the couple as well.
- "Hah, do you know how long I've been trying to smack some sense into my brother? Or old Minth?
I don't think about the Singer much, but I might go listen to Belwelas preach. Just because you came walking down the road."
