Vigrod Wraithbane was a Harbinger of the Companions in the Second Era, during the Three Banners War of the Interregnum. Although he was not affiliated with the Ebonheart Pact, he gladly wielded his blades in its service and was loyal to King Jorunn.[1]
History[edit]
Little is known about Vigrod's past, but he hailed from a humble farming background. Eventually, he chose to join the Companions. While his father insisted he should have remained on the farm, deep down, he felt a quiet pride in having a son among the Companions. Vigrod's promotion to Harbinger brought great joy to his family. Although his family were farmers,[2] as of 2E 581, Vigrod claimed that he remained loyal to the Skald-King Jorunn despite his clan's tradition as mercenary sellswords. At that time, he was described as broad-shouldered and sociable,[3] though, in his mother’s words, he was not the most handsome and was shy in his younger years.[2] He was known to wield an axe in combat and had a friendly rivalry with Holgunn One-Eye.[3]
In 2E 581, he and two of his subordinates, Uli and Rargal, found Flaccus Terentius, Envoy-Scholar of the Empress Regent Clivia Tharn lost in the cold wilderness of Skyrim during his travels. The next morning, Vigrod agreed to take him along as they hiked south to their home at Fallowstone Hall in the Rift Hold. Vigrod shared many stories with Flaccus, who remarked that his tales and legends of the Companions could fill three volumes of yore. Flaccus was instructed not to transcribe them, however.[3]
In 2E 582, Vigrod led his Companions to defend Shor's Stone against an attack by the Reachfolk Boneshaper Clan.[1][4][5] As Vigrod took the bulk of his forces to defend the settlement, another group of Reachfolk, the Rageclaw Clan, under the command of Chieftain Frostfang, seized control of Fallowstone Hall. They tried to steal Wuuthrad with the hope of reviving the half-giant chieftain of legend Sinmur, and his army. The recruits of the Companions who remained to protect the hall and its sage, Tirora, were killed. Most survivors fled to the shrines, while the Reachmen sealed themselves in the inner vault, placing a ward on the entrance.[1][6]
Upon hearing the news Vigrod pledged to retake Fallowstone Hall.[7] Together with the King's Arrow, he led the charge to reclaim the hall, first rallying any survivors. When the Companions discovered the ward, the King's Arrow made contact with Tirora's spirit, who dispelled the barrier. Chieftain Frostfang fought against the King's Arrow but was ultimately killed. Despite this, the Reachfolk alliance managed to secure the legendary Wuuthrad.[6] Although the Hall was returned to the Nords, Vigrod was taking the losses there quite hard.[8] Following Tirora's death and the reclamation of the hall, he officially promoted Svari to the role of the new Sage of the Companions.[1][9][10] Svari and Vigrod pledged to ensure that the Companions would recover from this setback.[10]
The Reachfolk threat to the region was ultimately dealt with,[11] Wuuthrad was restored,[12][13] and Sinmur was defeated at the summit of Mount Trolhetta.[14][13] Vigrod was involved, both directly and indirectly, in all of these events.[1]
He accompanied King Jorunn on a diplomatic mission to Stirk, serving as his bodyguard. During the battle against Molag Bal's forces there, he fought valiantly and sustained injuries, but ultimately survived.[1][15]
