The Shambles

The Vanquished Clan, also known as the Vanquished, is an unaffiliated clan of Dremora and one of the gangs of the Fargrave's district of the Shambles. It is unknown where they came from, though the most popular theories postulate that once served a forgotten Daedric Prince.[1][2]

They are known to roam the realms of Oblivion and seek out the most squalid and lawless situations, making a place for themselves there. Some sources claim that they believe they deserve no better. Unlike most Dremora, the Vanquished ignore distinctions of rank or title. It was speculated that this may stem from the fact that all Vanquished are considered varlets or churls by the rest of their kind. In Fargrave, they are known as one of the gangs that control the Shambles.[2] Similarly to the Errants and the Invisible Web, they consider it their hunting grounds.[3][4] They control the central plazas of the Shambles as one of their territories.[2]

History[edit]

Little is known of the origins of the Vanquished. They are an independent Dremora clan with no Daedric Prince patron. They consist primarily of outcasts and exiles, are treated with contempt by other Dremora, and are considered a clan of the clanless. According to theories of some mortal sages, surviving members of the Dremora clans sworn to a Prince who is completely defeated, destroyed, or forgotten, become Vanquished. Others believe that Vanquished can only be created by rituals of punishment enacted for great failures or faithlessness. Some of them are deemed unworthy to serve any Prince, others are exiled. The Vanquished themselves keep their origins secret, but they take bitter pride in enduring the unendurable. Despite their position, they are cruel, unpredictable, and belligerent. They are known for their arrogance toward anyone they perceive as their inferior. The Vanquished take offense at any slight and do not regard their word as binding when given to a lesser creature, such as a mortal. An agreement with the Vanquished usually lasts only as long as it's convenient to the Dremora and might be abandoned on a whim.[1][2][2]

According to the legends of the denizens of Fargrave no Prince ever wanted them. Other stories claim that they did something so awful their Prince abandoned them. Yet another account claims that they have no sense of loyalty and abandoned their Prince themselves. As of 2E 582 the leader of the Vanquished was Enzir. She led them from their hovels along the central plazas of the Shambles.[5][6][7] She was not known for any special cleverness or guile, but no other Vanquished attempted to challenge her authority.[2] As of then they were known to steal the goods from the Gleaners of Aurbis' drop sites.[8]
