The Rat was a former advisor to Emperor Leovic, who remained hiding in the Imperial City after his emperor was deposed.[1] His extensive knowledge of the hidden passages within the city was instrumental in defending the capital from the attack of the forces of Molag Bal in 2E 582.[2]
History[edit]
Little is known of the Rat's past, including his real name. He was one of the tutors of the young prince Leovic. Alongside the witches of the Icereach Coven, he taught him about Reachfolk culture and provided Reach-inspired training.[3] Once Leovic ascended the throne as the emperor, the Rat assumed the position of his adviser. He served his monarch with loyalty until he was overthrown by the forces of Varen Aquilarios in 2E 577.[1][4][3]
Following the death of the last emperor of the Longhouse dynasty, the Rat went into hiding. Unlike most of his kinsmen,[5] he remained in the Imperial City and took shelter in the vast complex of the Imperial City sewers.[1] Although this new lifestyle drove him insane, it was believed that he knew the secrets and the layout of Imperial City better than anyone else of his contemporaries. Following the Planemeld he briefly contacted the Drake of Blades, though the nature of this meeting was unknown.[6]
He remained in the sewers and experienced hardships of life underground, and "survived fire and claw and fang". At some point, during the Planemeld Obverse he assaulted and murdered Mycaelis Julus,[7] an Imperial architect and a representative of the Council for Civic Planning.[8] He also accessed his private correspondence and replied to several correspondents in his place.[7]
In 2E 582, Molag Bal's forces took over the Imperial City and used the Arena for entertainment by forcing captured citizens to fight against Daedric creatures such as Clannfear and Ogrim. The Rat left notices in the bases of the forces of the Aldmeri Dominion, Ebonheart Pact and Daggerfall Covenant, who fought for the control of the ruined city. He requested the warriors to slay the Daedra in the Arena District. The Vestige participated in the Arena against such creatures and against the Xivkyn Dredaza the Ringmaster, who acted as the Arena's announcer. When Dredaza was defeated, the Rat gave the Vestige the crucial information regarding the Dragonfires and Molag Bal as a reward.[2][1]
He contacted the Vestige and the Drake of Blades once again and sent them an urgent letter together with a map with a marked location. He requested them to recover the secret message left in the designated barrel in one of the districts of the ruined Imperial City. It is unknown whether it was in the Memorial District, Elven Gardens, or the Temple District. The Vestige retrieved the encoded letter and delivered it to the Drake of Blades. She managed to decipher it. The message contained confidential information regarding the movements of the Xivkyn General Malivus and his forces.[9][10][6] His fate following the end of the Planemeld Obverse is unknown.
