Seaside Sanctuary is a harbor settlement located off the Drowned Coast, in the province of Valenwood. It is one of two major ports in Greenshade, the other being the region's capital of Woodhearth.[1] Seaside Sanctuary was built by the Altmer seeking to establish a port on Valenwood.[2]

History[edit]

When the settlement was founded is unknown, but the Second Era was when the Altmer tried to establish a foothold in Valenwood, leading to several other ports like the re-constructed city of Haven[3] and the northern town of Velyn Harbor.[4][5] The story of how Seaside Sanctuary was founded is a honored tale of bravery and cleverness. Three Altmer: Hirume, Meluuran, and their leader, Eldamar, known collectively as the Heroes of the Sanctuary, traveled across the Blue Divide and made landfall on the Drowned Coast after defeating a sea serpent.[2]

There, they were met with hostility from the native Bosmer, but decided to meet with their leaders and study their customs. Taking notice of the Rite of Theft, the three decided to make a wager with the Bosmer. If they could steal their staff of great value, then the heroes would leave forever, but if the three stole an item from each treethane, then they would be allowed to settle in Valenwood. Ultimately, the Heroes of the Sanctuary succeeded, and the Bosmer were never close to taking the staff. From then, the Seaside Sanctuary was established.[2] By the mid-Second Era, the Seaside Sanctuary was a major port, alongside Woodhearth to the south.[1]

In 2E 582, Vicereeve Pelidil, with the remnants of the Veiled Heritance signed a treaty with the Maormer and orchestrated an attack on Greenshade, first with a siege on Seaside Sanctuary to gain a foothold on Valenwood.[6] The Aldmeri Dominion retaliated with Major Cirenwe at the helm and an all-out battle erupted. Razum-dar of the Eyes of the Queen and the Vestige freed some notable hostages and defeated the Maormer commanders. Once the beacon in the lighthouse was lit, the Dominion crashed down on Seaside Sanctuary and reclaimed the port.[7]

Before the Dominion arrived, however, Pelidil escaped into the Abecean Sea. The Vestige, aboard the Prowler followed suit, and the two engaged in an epic battle. Siege weapons were blasted across ships, and sea serpents wreaked havoc. The Vestige ultimately defeated Pelidil and secured victory for the Dominion. The legendary Battle of Seaside Sanctuary was set to be remembered fondly for generations and inspire the Aldmeri Dominion.[8] The Vestige's battle with Vicereeve Pelidil is likewise remembered as "the Tale of the Prowler and the fierce Maormer Sea Serpent" and recounted across the many port-towns. They say they defeated a hundred Sea Elves with their bare fist while swinging from the rigging, rode a sea serpent as a mount, and rocked the seas and reshaped the coast with their final battle.[9]
