Mazzatun is a ruined city found in the region of Shadowfen, within the province of Black Marsh. Colloquially known as the "Puzzle City," Mazzatun is an expansive labyrinth of cramped walls, twisted hallways, and numerous dead-ends. The ruins are home to Tsono-Xuhil, a powerful, mad Hist tree that produces Amber Plasm,[1] a strange substance that drives whoever ingests or bathes in it mad.[2] The city was built and inhabited by its children, the Argonian Xit-Xaht tribe.[3]
The city's summit was home to the Xit-Xaht tribe's uxith: nests lined the cliffside cradled beneath the Hist's whorling roots.[4]
History[edit]
Mazzatun has existed for centuries, and—at least up until 2E 582—the Xit-Xaht never stopped building.[3] Locals from neighboring tribes knew to avoid the ruins because "the Hist [was] crazy", and offered little information about the city to curious outsiders aside from warnings to stay away.[1] This Hist of Mazzatun produced Amber Plasm, which is not typical Hist Sap: it was likened to chaotic creatia by a foreign scholar. This odd substance has wept from Tsono-Xuhil since time immemorial.[2] When the Knahaten Flu broke out in 2E 560, a detachment of soldiers from Great House Redoran was sent to Mazzatun to clear out the Xit-Xaht, believing that they caused the plague. The Xit-Xaht later returned to the city.[1]
During the Interregnum around 2E 582, the Su-Zahleel tribe was kidnapped by the Xit-Xaht and forced into slavery to continue Mazzatun's ever-ongoing construction. One of the Su-Zahleel tribesmen evaded capture and hired the Undaunted to kill the Xit-Xaht Tree-Minder, Na-Kesh, and free the Su-Zahleel from enslavement. The Undaunted trekked through the ancient ruins, rescuing the Su-Zahleel elders and defeating Na-Kesh at the city's summit. The Su-Zahleel elders recognized that Tsono-Xuhil was suffering. In an effort to begin to allow the Hist to heal, they sent it into a deep slumber that lasted for an indeterminate amount of time.[5]
