A solar eclipse

An Eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon that happens when a celestial body is temporarily obscured by passing into the shadow of another body, usually by having another body pass between it and the sky of Nirn. Due to the two moons, solar eclipses can happen in Tamriel several times a year and are known as Vampire Days.[UOL 1] During eclipses spirits, vampires and other undead, are said to be encountered more frequently. The phenomenon is sometimes thought to represent the loss of the favor of Akatosh and to be possible to undo with diligent prayer to that deity. Tamrielic kings have also been known to sometimes use time altering magical items such as Arcane Hourglasses to fast forward time and undo the phenomenon. Inhabitants of Tamriel can sometimes receive warning of an impending eclipse in the form of prophetic nightmares revolving around it and the subsequent surge of spirits and undead.[1][2] The Necromancer's Moon eclipses the planet Arkay every eight days, preventing its light from reaching Nirn for 24 hours. This celestial phenomenon is known as the Shade of the Revenant, and casts a purple light down on certain locations across Tamriel during this period.[3][4]

Those born during a rare eclipse of Tamriel's moons are unusually gifted in the magical arts.[5] There are some stories about Daedric armor that say that it should always be worked on at night, and never during an eclipse.[6] Khajiit born under a mutual eclipse of Nirn's two moons are designated as part of the Mane furstock, and are "beacons" of Alkosh's divine grace, even though not all of them will go on to become the titular Mane. The Moons call them stronger than others, so they must maintain a strong will to resist that call, lest allowing the darkness of Lorkhaj to darken their heart.[7][8] The symbol of an eclipsed moon is known as the Hollow Moon.[9]

  • In the original concept for the early, unreleased version of Summerset zone for ESO, the rogue planet Orgnavar would eclipse the sky and darken heaven's glory with malevolence.[UOL 2]
