Cave of Hidden Music (or the Cave of the Hidden Music)[1] is a cavern located in the snow laden woodland of the Solstheim, currently in the province of Morrowind. It is a large cavern located in the Isinfier Plains, where the "rocks hung from the ceiling and grew from the ground itself," and the "Song of the Earth," a faint melody found deep in the cave, in the Chamber of Song.[1] It partially serves as an ancient Nordic barrow, so it is swarmed by the draugr, the undead Nordic warriors of yore.

History[edit]

Aevar Stone-Singer, the Skaal youth traveled to the Cave of Hidden Music to reclaim the Gift of the Earth, one of the gifts stolen from his people by the Adversary. He traveled from the southwest and eventually came upon the Chamber of Song, where he heard the faint song. He grabbed his mace and struck the rocks on the floor in time to the song until it became louder. He was returned to the Earth Stone with the Gift of the Earth and made the land rich with life again.[1] Ever since then, Aevar's pilgrimage became the Skaal's test of loyalty and if anyone wanted to become trusted by the tribe, they must undergo the same path as Aevar Stone-Singer.[2]

In 3E 427, a traveler from Vvardenfell traveled to the Skaal Village on the north coast of Solstheim after Fort Frostmoth was attacked by a pack of werewolves and their captain, Falx Carius was kidnapped. The Imperial Garrison believed that the Skaal might have information on the incident. However, when the Chieftain, Tharsten Heart-Fang claimed that they were no involved, he told the traveler that they must atone for the Legion's sin of disturbing the nature by undergoing the Skaal's test of loyalty. They were sent to undergo rituals around the All-Maker Stones, much like the folkhero, Aevar Stone-Singer.[3] The traveler went to the Cavern of Hidden Music and underwent the same trial that Aevar went through. Eventually, they acquired every gift and became trusted among the Skaal.[3][4]

When Red Mountain erupted in 4E 5 (remembered in history as the Red Year), the southern-half of Solstheim was left completely demolished by the vicious ash storms coming from across the water.[5] Much of the land south of the Moesring Mountains was swallowed by the ash wastes and there's no indication that the Cave of Hidden Music was left unscathed as there is no information on the location in the Fourth Era.[6]
