Detailed Walkthrough[edit]

The Gift[edit]

Speak to the beldam of a witch coven, who says:

"Thou wouldst help (witch coven), (player's first name)? Many come to us for aid, and then turn from us once their wishes have been met, their oaths are curses, their promises are abominations. For the gratitude of (witch coven), wouldst thou punish one transgressor for the sisterhood?"

Accept[edit]

The beldam goes on:

"Wilt thou truly? If thou wilt, a fine (magical item) will be crafted for thee. Now, journey thou to farthest (regional tavern) and seek he who has betrayed us, a villianous [sic] (recipient's description) who calls himself (recipient's name). Give to him this (cursed item), tell him it is a gift from his old lover, and then come back to us. Thou must to hurry, for the (cursed item) will transform his outerself to a semblance of his inner beauty. (Witch coven) wilt expect thee in (time limit) days. May (Daedra Prince) smile on thy sacred quest."

Decline[edit]

The beldam answers:

"Not even that wouldst thou do? (Oath), by (Daedra Prince), I suppose it is better not to promise what thou cannot deliver, yet still I am aggrieved."

The Price of Betrayal[edit]

The betrayer, before the tables are turned...

Basically, this is as simple delivery task. Travel to the specified Regional Tavern. In the tavern, meet the item's recipient and give it to them. As soon as you do this, following message pops up:

(Recipient's name) thanks you for the (cursed item). He tries it on as you are telling him who sent it. His eyes light up in fear at the name of (witch coven), and then the fear turns to pain.
...and immediately after.

They will than transform into a daedroth, a giant, a harpy, or a zombie; there is a 25% chance for each of these monsters. If you kill the monster, the witches will be very disappointed when you report back, so be sure to make your escape without killing it. Return to the beldam and collect your reward.

Reward[edit]

If you return to the beldam after killing the monster, she will be very angry:

"Thou wert not to kill the man, merely give to him the (cursed item)! Oaf! Assassin! (Recipient's name) was to suffer deeply for his insolence, not be painlessly slain. (Daedra Prince) curse thee, (player's first name)."

The beldam will also curse you with Stomach Rot; naturally, you won't get any reward. In addition, you will also lose reputation with The Merchants.

If you return to the beldam without killing the monster, she will be pleased and say:

"Good (player's first name), thy promise to the [sic] (witch coven) is fulfilled. Here is the (magical item) I promised. Poor (recipient's name). I hope they allow him to suffer deeply, before he is put to death."

Reputation Gain/Loss[edit]

A successfully completed quest results in a reputation gain according to the table below.

Faction/Person Reputation Gain
Witch Coven +5

A failed quest (time limit expired) results in a reputation loss according to the table below.

Additional Reputation[edit]

Bugs[edit]

  • The target of the coven's wrath may be male or female, but the majority of the quest dialogue uses solely male pronouns.
    • DFQFIX replaces plain-text pronouns in the dialogue with variables, although for unknown reasons the "he or she" variables will always return a value of "he."
  • The beldam's dialogue if you have slain the monster does not display when you speak upon return to the coven.
    • DFQFIX corrects this oversight, restoring the dialogue's functionality.

Additional Dialogue[edit]

After you have accepted this quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Recipient's name) is a true example of self-made man. A marvel to behold."
  • "(Witch coven) can be extremely vengeful."

If you fail the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Recipient's name) is laughing at the idea that (he/she) owes anything to (witch coven)."
  • "(Recipient's name) has left (regional tavern). And (he/she) will be sorely missed."

If you successfully complete the quest, NPCs may say when asked for any news:

  • "(Recipient's name) transformed into a horrible beast before the tavernfolk at (inn)."
  • "(Recipient's name) must have been trafficking with daedra. (Oath), what a fate."

If you successfully complete the quest, the quest giver may later greet you with:

  • "Truly, I hope thou art enjoying thy (magical item), (player's first name)."

If you failed the quest, the quest giver will greet you with:

  • "Our vengeance against (recipient's name) is not complete! Get thee from here, or (his/her) deserved fate wilt be visited upon thou, (player's first name)."
