A king ordered the drawing of an intricate labyrinth. He summoned his courtiers and said: "whoever goes through this labyrinth the fastest, I will make him my minister". One courtier jumped out of the crowd and quickly ran right over the painted walls, ignoring the lines.
The king laughed and ordered him to leave the palace.
"But I completed the task the fastest!" said the courtier. "Why did you not only not make me a minister, but also alienate me from yourself?"
The king ordered a ram brought to the palace. The servants brought the ram, put it at the beginning of the labyrinth, and put hay at the end. The ram ran to the hay, not paying attention to the drawing. And the king said:
"This ram ran on the floor faster than you. Does this mean that I should appoint him minister?"
