The Tarlain Heights is a region roughly around central Valenwood, specifically in northwestern Grahtwood. It is the region's least populated area, with its main population center being the town of Redfur Trading Post, located near the crossroad towards Marbruk in Greenshade and the Xylo River Basin in Malabal Tor. But in the past, Tarlain Heights contained significant settlements, namely Gil-Var-Delle, one of the province's graht-oak cities and Falinesti during the winter season. Some of Grahtwood's Wood Orc clans historically live in the region, such as the Barkbite Clan of Reman's Bluff and the Orcs of Goldfolly.[1]
History[edit]
Some of Tarlain Heights' oldest ruins include the Tomb of Anahbi and the Ayleid ruins of Falinesti's winter site and Wormroot Depths, all of which have some connection to the Khajiit. Anahbi is a mythical Khajiit figure of an unknown age who hailed from Quin'rawl.[2] Her tomb was thought to be lost in time until it was discovered in the mid-Second Era.[3] The Ayleids first came to Valenwood after the Alessian Slave Rebellion of the early First Era. And through assimilation with the local Bosmer, their culture and society dwindled, and their ruins were abandoned.[4]
Wormroot Depths, an Ayleid outpost near the road to Malabal Tor, contains an ancient Khajiit chamber that holds a triangular piece for deciphering a map on the Wrathstone.[5] This location was chosen in association with Nurarion the Perfect, a companion to the Merethic Era hero Khunzar-ri who "communed among the buried roots of the Ayleid worms."[6] The history of the Ayleid ruins under Falinesti's winter site is unknown. But in the modern age, they are known as Nairume's Prison. Nairume was a First Era Altmer noblewoman from Falinesti that caught the affection of Rajhin's shadow of desire. When he was rejected, he bound her for eternity with Rajhin's Mantle and the ice from his vault covered the ruins.[7][8]
Significant events occurred in Tarlain Heights in the late First Era. During the Second Empire's conquest of Valenwood, the Imperial Legion built the fort Reman's Bluff beyond the Kingdom of Grahtwood's borders. After a siege from hostile Wood Orcs, General Zantonius left the stronghold to the wilderness and later built Southpoint on the Long Coast. The Barkbite Clan of Wood Orcs moved in to establish their clanhold. However, they reportedly have no direct connections to the Orcish invaders.[9][10] Faltonia Salvius, an Imperial that sought riches and opportunity in Grahtwood decided to build a mining town in central Tarlain Heights and conscripted local Wood Orcs to harvest gold in the mines. The mine dried up within a year and later failed as a quarry mine. The town became known as Goldfolly[11] and by the mid-Second Era, it was abandoned.[1]
In 1E 2920, the town of Gil-Var-Delle was destroyed by Molag Bal. Its story has been publicized and dramatized throughout the years, most famously in Carlovac Townway's historical fiction, 2920, The Last Year of the First Era. Although some claim these stories are not confirmed,[12] the incident is attributed to King Dro'Zel of Senchal, who did it in response to a Bosmer bard's retelling of the Legend of the Lovers.[13][14] Sometime during the Akaviri Potentate period, the city of Falinesti disappeared, having never returned to any of its seasonal sites. Until its return, each of its sites, including the winter one, was taken care of by the Falinesti Faithful.[15]
By the mid-Second Era, Redfur Trading Post was founded over Anahbi's tomb, and it was the region's main settlement.[1] Haven on the other side of the region had been rebuilt by the Altmer,[16] who also brought the New Life tradition called the War Orphan's Sojourn with them. Every year, locals will make a pilgrimage to the Temple of the Eight in Tarlain Heights to donate money to children in need.[17] In 2E 582, General Endare of the Jade Dragoons went to the Falinesti Winter Site to retrieve Rajhin's Mantle for the Aldmeri Dominion. In the end, however, the General died in vain attempt to seize power but Nairume was freed from her prison.[18]
Village of Tarlain Heights[edit]
There is a settlement also called Tarlain Heights located north of the bay between Greenheart and Southpoint.[19]
During the Imperial Simulacrum in the late Third Era, the village of Tarlain Heights was an active settlement. It was ruled by Lord Aracher and had a rivalry with Archen Cormount.[20] Tarlain Heights was neighbored by several settlements, such as Archen Cormount to the north-northeast, Greenheart to the far west-southwest, and Stonesquare to the east.[19]
